Monochrome

Early one morning, sixteen-year-old Grace wakes to find herself staring at an ashen sunrise in ominous grey skies. It’s like watching a disaster movie, though her family don’t seem to think anything is wrong. Grace is one of only a handful of people in the country who are seeing the world in shades of grey. But this is only the beginning of the ‘greyout’, or Monochrome Effect, that is rapidly sweeping the population. And it’s not just humans – animals and birds are affected as well.

Loss of colour vision is traced to polluted water systems: microplastics covered in harmful bacteria that have been poured unchecked into the ocean for years. With widespread accidents, failing harvests and stay-at-home orders in a world that’s on the brink of a major ecological disaster, there appears to be no cure – until one day Grace sees a single flash of red…

She agrees to join a government-run study with other teenagers who experience intermittent ‘colour episodes’. They are promised that they are the key to reversing the damage, but Grace soon realises that the reality is much more complicated, shocking, and dangerous than they could ever have imagined…

Reviews for Monochrome

The thrills are accompanied by fascinating information on the ability of pollution to cross the blood–brain barrier, and on the machinations of international companies and the ultra-rich.

Natasha Cooper, Literary Review

This thought-provoking eco-thriller, set in an all-too-convincing near future, examines the impact of underregulated capitalism.

Imogen Russell Williams, Guardian

A terrifying concept because it seems so believable - great characters and a fantastic heroine.

Elly Griffiths, bestselling author of the Ruth Galloway series

A compelling dystopian tale set in a chillingly realistic future.

Katherine Webber, author of Wing Jones & Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Monochrome is a page-turning, thrilling mix of the personal with the political. This is about what happens to an individual; in the writing we really feel and experience what Grace is going through. But it's also about a worldwide affliction; the condition described rapidly becomes a tool of power and, as power often does, this leads to corruption. Monochrome explores what we are doing to the planet and how it comes back on us, in unpredictable and dangerous ways... Very well written, involving, exciting and convincing.

Chris Vick, author of The Last Whale

This novel has a cool message without ever getting patronising or worthy. This was a great blend of science fiction, dystopia and political intrigue.

Tony Jones, Gingernuts of Horror

The environmental angle here, addressing the prevalence of microplastics and its danger to humans, is never heavy-handed: there's too much action for that to be the case. Thought-provoking and engaging.

Claire Hennessey, The Irish Times
